ARNOLD PALMER TO PRESENT SPIRIT OF HOPE AWARD

Golf legend Arnold Palmer will present the 2nd annual Arnold Palmer Spirit of Hope Award to Baseball Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski during the Adelphoi Golf Classic reception on May 20 at the Latrobe Country Club.

Arnold Palmer was the recipient of last year’s Spirit of Hope Award. The award has since been named in honor of Palmer for his contributions to charitable organizations and for his accomplishments in golf.

The award is given annually to honor someone who exemplifies the mission of Adelphoi, a private, not-for-profit human services organization that serves over 1,800 children, youth and families each year through a wide range of programs including group homes, foster care, alternative education and day treatment.

Maz has been a long-time supporter of the Golf Classic and he is an inspiration and positive role model for youth everywhere,” said Carol Palcic, golf coordinator for Adelphoi. “He was also a very good friend of Nellie Briles who was the driving force behind the success of the Adelphoi Golf Classic.”

Mazeroski spent his entire baseball career (1956-72) with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is considered one of the greatest defensive second basemen of his time and is best known for winning the 1960 World Series with a game-ending home run in the 9th inning of game 7 against the New York Yankees. Mazeroski is a 10-time National League All-Star who was inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

“Bill Mazeroski has been a part of our event for several years. He has been a celebrity golfer in the Golf Classic and many have requested to golf with him,” said Fran Marasco, co-chair of the Golf Classic. “We believe his career and the way he’s led his life has inspired many young adults.”

The public is invited to attend. Tickets are $85 each or $150 per couple. A silent auction will also be held with items including golf packages, autographed sports memorabilia, spa packages, and a limited edition lithograph from Arnold Palmer’s personal collection signed by Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson.

For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Carol Palcic at 724-836-5310 or email her at: carolp@adelphoivillage.org.
