ARNOLD PALMER PRESENTS SPIRIT OF HOPE AWARD TO ART ROONEY

Golf Legend Arnold Palmer presented the Arnold Palmer Spirit of Hope Award to Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney II during the Adelphoi Golf Classic reception at the Latrobe Country Club.

Palmer was the first recipient of the award in 2006.  The award has since been named in honor of Palmer for his contributions to charitable organizations and for his accomplishments in golf.  Baseball Hall-of-Famer Bill Mazeroski received the award in 2007.

The award is given annually to honor someone who exemplifies the mission of Adelphoi, a private, not-for-profit human services organization that serves over 2,000 children, youth and families each year through a wide range of programs including group homes, foster care, alternative education and day treatment.

Art Rooney II was named president of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2002, succeeding his father Dan and grandfather Art Sr. to become the third president in Steelers history.  Under his leadership, the Steelers became the first team in the AFC to win 15 regular-season games, in 2004, and won their first Super Bowl in 26 years.

Art Rooney, along with the entire Rooney family, has served as an outstanding example of philanthropy for his tireless contributions to organizations in the community. Through his work at the Pittsburgh Steelers, Art Rooney has orchestrated player appearances, charitable donations, and outreach program for non-profits and community groups as a way of giving back to the Pittsburgh region.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers Louis Lipps and Mike Wagner were among those in attendance, along with Pittsburgh Pirates Alumni Bill Mazeroski, Jim Sadowski and Kent Tekulve.  Bill Hillgrove, voice of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt Panthers, served as emcee.

The event included a silent auction with items such as golf packages, autographed sports memorabilia, jewelry, and a limited edition Doug London lithograph from Arnold Palmer’s personal collection signed by London and Palmer. The event raised over $20,000 for the benefit of the Nellie Briles fund, which assists Adelphoi Village youth in developing independent living skills.
